Artemisia Gentileschi: podcast appearances and interviews

Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi was an Italian Baroque painter born on July 8, 1593. She is regarded as one of the most accomplished artists of the 17th century and initially worked in the style of Caravaggio. Gentileschi began producing professional artwork at the age of 15. She was a pioneering woman in her field, becoming the first woman to join the Accademia di Arte del Disegno in Florence and establishing an international clientele. Gentileschi worked as an expatriate painter at the court of Charles I of England from 1638 to 1642; however, she appears to have fled England in the early years of the English Civil War. Her whereabouts remain unknown for a period, but she reemerged in Naples in 1649. The last known letter from her, dated 1650, suggests she continued working as an artist, and her final documented commission occurred in January 1654, although her date of death is disputed. Gentileschi is renowned for her paintings depicting women from myths, allegories, and the Bible, including notable works such as Susanna and the Elders, Judith Slaying Holofernes, and Judith and Her Maidservant. Her ability to depict the female figure with naturalism and her skill with color to express dimension and drama are notable features of her work. Her career and life, marked by the trauma of a rape and subsequent trial, have been reexamined in recent times, confirming her recognition as a significant artist through exhibitions at major institutions worldwide.
