About William Dalrymple
William Benedict Hamilton-Dalrymple, born on March 20, 1965, is a Scottish historian, art historian, indologist, curator, broadcaster, critic, and author. His work has garnered numerous awards and prizes, including the Wolfson History Prize, the Duff Cooper Prize, the Hemingway, the Kapuściński, the Arthur Ross Medal of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Thomas Cook Travel Book Award, the Mark Lynton History Prize, and the Sunday Times Young British Writer of the Year Award. Dalrymple's writings and documentaries have been recognized with several accolades; for example, his BBC television documentary 'Shiva's Matted Locks,' which was part of his Indian Journeys series, won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary Series at BAFTA in 2002. He has been nominated multiple times for the Baillie Gifford Prize for non-fiction and was a finalist for the Cundill History Prize. Dalrymple has been involved in academic and public engagements; he was appointed a Whitney J. Oates Visiting Fellow in the Humanities at Princeton University in 2012, served as the OP Jindal Distinguished Lecturer at Brown University in 2015, and received the British Academy President's Medal in 2018, its highest honor for service to the humanities and social sciences. Additionally, he is an honorary fellow of the Bodleian Library since 2021 and was a visiting fellow at All Souls College, Oxford, in 2024. Recognized as one of the top thinkers for the COVID-19 era by Prospect magazine in 2020, Dalrymple was also appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2023 for his contributions to literature and the arts. He is a co-founder and co-director of the Jaipur Literature Festival in India.
