Miriam Margolyes, born on 18 May 1941, is a British and Australian actress, comedian, and writer recognized for her extensive work across film, television, and stage. She received the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mrs. Mingott in Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence in 1993. Margolyes gained international prominence with her portrayal of Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter film series from 2001 to 2011. Her career began in theatre before transitioning to film, with early appearances including A Nice Girl Like Me in 1969. Her film credits encompass roles in Yentl, Little Shop of Horrors, Little Dorrit, I Love You to Death, Immortal Beloved, Balto, Romeo + Juliet, Magnolia, End of Days, Being Julia, and Ladies in Lavender. She also lent her voice to animated films such as Babe, James and the Giant Peach, Mulan, Happy Feet, Flushed Away, and Early Man.
