About Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan social, environmental, and political activist renowned for founding the Green Belt Movement, an organization dedicated to planting trees, environmental conservation, and promoting women's rights. Her efforts in ecological activism and mass reforestation earned her the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004, making her the first African woman to receive this honor. Maathai was a beneficiary of the Kennedy Airlift and obtained her bachelor's degree from Mount St. Scholastica College in Kansas, followed by a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She also became the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a Doctor of Philosophy degree, receiving her Ph.D. from the University of Nairobi. Her activism and advocacy extended into politics; she was an elected member of the Kenyan parliament and served as the assistant minister for environment and natural resources from 2003 to 2005 under President Mwai Kibaki. In addition to her political roles, Maathai was an academic and author of several books. Her intellectual contributions addressed issues related to ecology, development, gender, African cultures, and religions. Maathai received the Right Livelihood Award in 1984 for transforming ecological debates in Kenya into widespread actions for reforestation. She was also an Honorary Councillor in the World Future Council. Wangari Maathai passed away from complications related to ovarian cancer in September 2011.
