About Thich Nhat Hanh
Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese Thiền Buddhist monk, peace activist, author, poet, and teacher. He founded the Plum Village Tradition, which is prominently recognized as a major influence on engaged Buddhism. Known as the 'father of mindfulness,' he played a significant role in shaping Western practices of Buddhism. In the mid-1960s, Nhất Hạnh co-founded the School of Youth for Social Services and established the Order of Interbeing. He was exiled from South Vietnam in 1966 due to his opposition to the war and his refusal to take sides. In 1967, he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr. Nhất Hạnh founded numerous monasteries and practice centers, and he resided at the Plum Village Monastery in southwest France, which he established in 1982. Throughout his life, he traveled internationally to lead retreats and give talks, emphasizing deep listening as a means of nonviolent conflict resolution and raising awareness of the interconnectedness that sustains peace. He coined the term 'engaged Buddhism' in his book Vietnam: Lotus in a Sea of Fire. After a 39-year exile, Nhất Hạnh was permitted to visit Vietnam in 2005, and in 2018, he returned to his birthplace to reside at Từ Hiếu Temple near Huế, where he lived until his death in 2022 at the age of 95.
