Viola Davis, born on August 11, 1965, is an American actress and film producer recognized for her extensive achievements in the entertainment industry. A graduate of Juilliard, she began her career in small stage productions in Central Falls, Rhode Island, and made her Broadway debut in the August Wilson play Seven Guitars in 1996, earning her first Tony nomination. She has won two Tony Awards for her performances in August Wilson plays, including a win for Best Featured Actress in a Play for King Hedley II in 2001 and a win for Best Actress in a Play for Fences in 2010. Davis received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in the 2016 film adaptation of Fences, and has been nominated for Oscars for her performances in Doubt, The Help, and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Her television work includes her portrayal of Annalise Keating on ABC's How to Get Away with Murder, for which she became the first black actress to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. She has also appeared in the DC Extended Universe as Amanda Waller starting with Suicide Squad in 2016, and continued the role in Black Adam and the rebooted DC Universe. Her film credits include Widows and The Woman King. Davis and her husband founded JuVee Productions, and she is noted for her advocacy for human rights and women of color. In 2019, she became a L'Oréal Paris ambassador, and her memoir Finding Me was awarded a Grammy for Best Audio Book, Narration & Storytelling Recording in 2022.
