Troy Michael Kotsur is an American actor born on July 24, 1968, who is deaf. He began his acting career in the late 1980s working with the National Theatre of the Deaf. His television debut occurred in 2001 in an episode of Strong Medicine, and he made his film debut in the 2007 thriller The Number 23. Kotsur has received several notable awards, including a BAFTA Award, an Oscar, and a nomination for a Golden Globe Award. His stage career includes a Broadway debut in 2003 in a revival of Big River and a 2012 production of Cyrano, which earned him an Ovation Award nomination for Best Actor in a Play. In addition to acting, he directed and starred in the film No Ordinary Hero: The SuperDeafy Movie in 2013. He gained broader recognition with a guest role in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian in 2019. Kotsur received critical acclaim for his portrayal of a deaf father in the film CODA (2021), a role that earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This achievement made him the first male deaf actor to win an acting Oscar and the second deaf performer overall, after Marlee Matlin.
