Sir Anthony John Francis O'Reilly was an Irish businessman and international rugby union player. He was recognized for his try scoring abilities on the rugby field and represented Ireland, the British and Irish Lions, and the Barbarians. He is a member of the International Rugby Board's Hall of Fame. In the business realm, O'Reilly was involved in various significant roles. He led the Independent News & Media Group from 1973 to 2009 and served as the CEO and chairman of the H.J. Heinz Company. He was the leading shareholder of Waterford Wedgwood and a founder and major supporter of The Ireland Funds. O'Reilly was born in 1936 and was knighted as a Knight Bachelor for his services to Northern Ireland. His business pursuits contributed to his wealth, which made him a billionaire in his time; however, he faced legal challenges related to debts and financial losses in later years. O'Reilly had six children from his first marriage and was later married to Greek shipping heiress Chryss Goulandris. He lived in various locations including Lyford Cay in the Bahamas, Château des Ducs de Normandie in France, and County Kildare in Ireland. O'Reilly passed away after a short illness in Dublin in 2024 at the age of 88.
