Anthony Keith Gwynn Sr. was an American professional baseball right fielder who played his entire 20-season career with the San Diego Padres in Major League Baseball. Known as Mr. Padre, he is recognized for his exceptional hitting ability, winning eight batting titles which ties for the most in National League history. Gwynn was a 15-time All-Star, a seven-time Silver Slugger Award recipient, and a five-time Gold Glove Award winner. During his career, he maintained a .338 batting average, the highest since Ted Williams retired, and holds the highest adjusted batting average of all time. Gwynn competed at San Diego State University in both baseball and basketball, earning all-conference honors in both sports. Drafted in the third round of the 1981 MLB draft, he made his major league debut the following year. His early career was marked by a focus on contact hitting, but after meeting Hall of Famer Ted Williams in 1992, he adapted his approach for more power and pull hitting. Despite occasional injury setbacks, Gwynn achieved notable milestones including reaching 3,000 hits and playing in two World Series. He was also known for pioneering video analysis techniques to improve his performance. Gwynn was widely regarded as the greatest player in Padres history and was admired for his loyalty to the team and community. Off the field, he was an outspoken critic of performance-enhancing drugs and became a civic icon in San Diego. After retiring, he served as the head baseball coach at San Diego State University and worked as a baseball analyst. Gwynn passed away in 2014 at the age of 54 due to salivary gland cancer, a disease linked to his longstanding smokeless tobacco use.
