Thomas Edgar Wheeler, born on April 5, 1946, is an American businessman and former government official. He served as the 31st Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, a role in which he was appointed by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November 2013. As chairman, Wheeler was responsible for overseeing the regulatory agency that manages communications by cable, radio, television, satellite, and wireless services. Prior to his tenure at the FCC, he held significant positions within the telecommunications industry, including President of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association and CEO of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association. Wheeler's background also includes work as a venture capitalist and lobbyist representing the cable and wireless industries, sectors that the FCC is tasked with regulating.
