Timnit W. Gebru is an Eritrean Ethiopian-born computer scientist who specializes in artificial intelligence, algorithmic bias, and data mining. She is a co-founder of Black in AI, an advocacy organization that promotes increased Black representation in AI research and development. Additionally, she is the founder of the Distributed Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. In December 2020, Gebru was involved in a public controversy related to her departure from Google, where she was the technical co-lead of the Ethical Artificial Intelligence Team. The incident centered around her coauthored paper discussing the risks associated with large language models and the internal review process at Google. Google management asked her to withdraw the paper or remove Google-affiliated authors, leading to her termination, which she characterized as a resignation. Her departure drew significant attention to issues surrounding research ethics and corporate governance in AI research.
