About Thupten Jinpa

Thupten Jinpa Langri, born in 1958 in Tibet, is a Tibetan Buddhist scholar, former monk, and an academic with expertise in religious studies, Eastern, and Western philosophy. He has served as the principal English translator to the Dalai Lama since 1985, translating and editing more than ten books by the Dalai Lama, including The World of Tibetan Buddhism, A Good Heart: A Buddhist Perspective on the Teachings of Jesus, and the New York Times bestseller Ethics for the New Millennium. Jinpa received his early monastic education at Zongkar Choede Monastery near Mysore, India, and later studied at the Shartse College of Ganden monastic university in Karnataka, where he earned the Geshe Lharam degree. He taught Buddhist epistemology, metaphysics, Middle Way philosophy, and Buddhist psychology at Ganden for five years. In addition to his monastic training, Jinpa holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Western Philosophy and a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Cambridge University. From 1996 to 1999, he was the Margaret Smith Research Fellow in Eastern Religion at Girton College, Cambridge. He founded the Institute of Tibetan Classics, where he serves as president and editor-in-chief of the translation series Classics in Tibet. Jinpa is a member of the advisory board of the Mind and Life Institute, which promotes dialogue between Buddhism and Western science. He is also a visiting research scholar at Stanford University’s Stanford Institute for Neuro-Innovation and Translational Neurosciences. His recent publications include Tibetan Songs of Spiritual Experience and Self, Reality and Reason in Tibetan Thought.
