Tara VanDerveer: podcast appearances and interviews

Tara Ann VanDerveer, born June 26, 1953, is a retired American basketball coach recognized as an NCAA Coaching Legend. She served as the head women's basketball coach at Stanford University from 1985 until her retirement in 2024, and held the title of Setsuko Ishiyama Director of Women's Basketball. During her tenure, she led the Stanford Cardinal to three NCAA Women's Division I Basketball Championships in 1990, 1992, and 2021. In addition to her success at Stanford, VanDerveer coached the U.S. women's national team to a gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games, taking a year away from her Stanford duties for this role. VanDerveer has received numerous accolades including being named Naismith National Coach of the Year in 1990, 2011, and 2021, and earning the Pac-12 Coach of the Year award 18 times. She was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002. Recognized for her impressive career wins, VanDerveer is one of only nine NCAA Women's Basketball coaches to surpass 900 wins and one of ten NCAA Division I coaches overall to reach 1,000 wins. She achieved a record 1,099 wins on December 15, 2020, surpassing Pat Summitt, and became the winningest coach in men's and women's college basketball on January 21, 2024, with 1,203 wins. VanDerveer concluded her coaching career with 1,216 wins, and her record was surpassed by Geno Auriemma on November 20, 2024.
