Susan Bysiewicz, born on September 29, 1961, is an American politician and attorney who has served as the 109th lieutenant governor of Connecticut since 2019. Her political career in Connecticut includes serving as the 72nd secretary of the state from 1999 to 2011 and as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1993 to 1999. Bysiewicz has sought higher office multiple times; she was briefly a candidate for governor in 2010 before withdrawing to run for Connecticut attorney general, a campaign from which she was disqualified by the Connecticut Supreme Court. In 2011, she announced her bid for the United States Senate in 2012, aiming to succeed retiring Senator Joe Lieberman; however, she lost the Democratic primary to U.S. Representative Chris Murphy, who subsequently won the general election. In 2018, Bysiewicz initially filed to run for governor but withdrew shortly before the Democratic Convention and instead joined Ned Lamont's gubernatorial ticket as his running mate. She was then nominated for lieutenant governor during the state primary and has held that office since 2019.
