Edward Miner Lamont Jr. is an American politician and businessman serving as the 89th governor of Connecticut since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as a Greenwich selectman from 1987 to 1989. Lamont was the Democratic nominee for the United States Senate in 2006, but lost to the incumbent Independent senator Joe Lieberman. He ran for governor in 2010 but was defeated in the Democratic primary by Dannel Malloy, who went on to win the general election. Lamont was successful in his subsequent bid for governor in 2018, winning the nomination and defeating Republican candidate Bob Stefanowski. He was re-elected in 2022 by a wider margin, securing a second term. During his tenure as governor, Lamont has signed legislation that legalizes cannabis, sports betting, and online gambling. In 2025, he vetoed legislation related to housing supply in Connecticut.
