About Susan B. Anthony

Susan B. Anthony was an American social reformer and women's rights activist known for her significant contributions to the women's suffrage movement. Born into a Quaker family committed to social equality, she began her advocacy work early in life by collecting anti-slavery petitions at the age of 17. In 1856, she became the New York state agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Her partnership with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, formed in 1851, was central to her efforts in social reform. Together they founded the New York Women's State Temperance Society and the Women's Loyal National League during the Civil War, which conducted the largest petition drive in United States history at that time, supporting the abolition of slavery. Following the war, they founded the American Equal Rights Association to promote equal rights for women and African Americans and started publishing The Revolution, a women's rights newspaper, in 1868. In 1869, they established the National Woman Suffrage Association, which later merged with a rival organization to create the National American Woman Suffrage Association, with Anthony playing a leading role. Her activism extended to international efforts, including her participation in founding the International Council of Women and organizing the World's Congress of Representative Women in 1893 at the World's Columbian Exposition. Anthony also worked to advance voting rights for women, notably by being arrested in 1872 for voting unlawfully and by helping to draft the proposed Susan B. Anthony Amendment, which ultimately became the Nineteenth Amendment. Her lifelong dedication earned her widespread recognition, including her being the first female citizen depicted on U.S. coinage.
