About Susan B. Anthony
Susan B. Anthony was an American social reformer and women's rights activist born on February 15, 1820. She came from a Quaker family committed to social equality and demonstrated her dedication early by collecting anti-slavery petitions at the age of 17. In 1856, she became the New York state agent for the American Anti-Slavery Society. Anthony met Elizabeth Cady Stanton in 1851, and their partnership became central to the women's suffrage movement. Together they founded the New York Women's State Temperance Society after Anthony was prevented from speaking at a temperance conference due to her gender. During the Civil War, they established the Women's Loyal National League which organized the largest petition drive of its time, collecting nearly 400,000 signatures supporting the abolition of slavery. Following the war, they launched the American Equal Rights Association to promote equal rights for women and African Americans. In 1868, they began publishing The Revolution, a women's rights newspaper, and the following year, they founded the National Woman Suffrage Association. Their organization later merged with the American Woman Suffrage Association to form the National American Woman Suffrage Association, with Anthony remaining a key figure. Anthony was an active speaker, traveling extensively and delivering numerous speeches in support of women’s rights. She also worked internationally, contributing to the creation of the International Council of Women and participating in the 1893 World's Congress of Representative Women. Her efforts included a 1872 arrest for voting, which drew national attention, and her work for a women’s suffrage amendment led to the later ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. She died in 1906, leaving a legacy of activism that transformed the American women's rights movement.
