About Stephen Post

Stephen Post is the Strategic Communications Manager at the Center for Medical Humanities, Compassionate Care, and Bioethics at Stony Brook University. While his professional role is not connected to his historical namesake or background, the biography of Stephen Post on Wikipedia describes him as an early member of the Latter Day Saint movement who eventually became president of the Rigdonite church after Sidney Rigdon's death in 1876. The historical Stephen Post converted to Joseph Smith's Church of the Latter Day Saints in Pennsylvania in 1835 and was an active preacher, traveling extensively and delivering numerous sermons by 1837. Following the martyrdom of Joseph Smith in 1844 and the subsequent succession crisis, he initially remained unaffiliated, later joining James Strang's church briefly before disillusionment led him to leave. In 1856, Post wrote to Sidney Rigdon, leading to his involvement in efforts to reestablish the Rigdonite organization, in which he became a prominent advocate and was designated as Rigdon's spokesman in 1866. He and his wife, Jane Post, who converted and was later ordained an elder, spent much of their lives in Manitoba, Canada. After Rigdon's death in 1876, Post succeeded him as leader of the church. His tenure was short, ending with his death in 1879 after an extended illness. Subsequently, his widow Jane became church president in 1882, and the organization eventually disbanded. The biography reflects Stephen Post's historical significance within the early Mormon schismatic movements.
