About Sly Stone

Sylvester Stewart, better known as Sly Stone, was an American musician, songwriter, and record producer born in Denton, Texas, and raised in Vallejo, California. He demonstrated musical talent early in life by mastering several instruments and performing gospel music with his siblings. In the mid-1960s, he worked as a record producer for Autumn Records and as a disc jockey for San Francisco radio station KDIA. In 1966, he and his brother Freddie formed the band Sly and the Family Stone, which became notable for its racially integrated, mixed-gender lineup and fusion of musical styles.

Sly and the Family Stone achieved commercial and critical success with hits such as 'Dance to the Music,' 'Everyday People,' 'Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),' 'I Want to Take You Higher,' 'Family Affair,' and 'If You Want Me to Stay.' Their albums, including Stand!, There's a Riot Goin' On, and Fresh, are considered influential within the genre. Stone played a pivotal role in developing psychedelic soul and funk, blending soul, rock, psychedelia, and gospel. His contributions earned him a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993 and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017. Despite his success, his drug use and erratic behavior in the mid-1970s led to the group's decline and his subsequent solo endeavors, which met with limited success. Stone collaborated with artists such as Parliament-Funkadelic, Bobby Womack, and Jesse Johnson.

He participated in a Sly and the Family Stone tribute at the 2006 Grammy Awards and was selected for induction into the National Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame in 2025. His autobiography, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), was published in 2023.
