Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle (22 May 1859 – 7 July 1930) was a British writer and physician best known for his creation of Sherlock Holmes, a fictional consulting detective. Doyle authored four novels and fifty-six short stories featuring Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson, which are considered milestones in crime fiction. In addition to Holmes, he created Professor Challenger, first appearing in the novel The Lost World in 1912, which contributed to the development of speculative fiction subgenres. Doyle was a prolific writer whose works included over 200 stories and articles, four volumes of poetry, and several stage works. His literary career began while studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School, with early stories published during that period. He served as a doctor and surgeon on two sea voyages, inspiring stories such as J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement, which popularized the mystery of the Mary Celeste. Doyle's first Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, was published in 1887, and the character became immensely popular through periodic stories in The Strand Magazine. Although he temporarily killed off Holmes in The Final Problem in 1893, public demand led to the character’s return in The Hound of the Baskervilles in 1901. Doyle also wrote humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard and was actively involved in political and social issues. He supported causes like compulsory vaccination and justice reform, personally investigating cases that resulted in exonerations. A former Catholic and later agnostic, Doyle became a spiritualist and publicly embraced supernatural phenomena. His works remain widely read and adapted in modern times, with Sherlock Holmes recognized as one of the most portrayed literary characters in film and television history.
