Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkett, 18th Baron Dunsany, commonly known as Lord Dunsany, was an Anglo-Irish writer and dramatist born on 24 July 1878. Throughout his lifetime, he published over 90 books, which included hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, and essays. His literary work has had a significant influence on the fantasy genre, with his early writings considered foundational by many critics. His notable works include the 1924 fantasy novel The King of Elfland's Daughter and his debut book The Gods of Pegāna, which features a fictional pantheon of gods. He gained recognition in the 1910s as a prominent author in the English-speaking world and was associated with figures such as W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory, supporting the Abbey Theatre and fellow writers. Born in London and heir to an old Irish peerage, he was raised partly in Kent and later lived primarily at Dunsany Castle near Tara, Ireland. In addition to his literary pursuits, Lord Dunsany was a champion in chess and pistol shooting in Ireland, devising an asymmetrical game called Dunsany's chess. He traveled extensively and engaged in hunting, and in his later years, was awarded an honorary doctorate from Trinity College Dublin. He settled in Shoreham, Kent, in 1947. Lord Dunsany passed away in Dublin in 1957 due to appendicitis while visiting Ireland.
