Charles Patrick Ryan O'Neal was an American actor born in Los Angeles. He trained as an amateur boxer before beginning his acting career in 1960. O'Neal gained early fame with his role as Rodney Harrington on the ABC nighttime soap opera Peyton Place in 1964, which was an instant hit and boosted his career in television. He later transitioned to film, achieving notable success in several movies. His performance in the romantic drama Love Story in 1970 earned him nominations for the Academy Award for Best Actor and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. Other significant film roles include appearances in Peter Bogdanovich's What's Up, Doc? (1972), Paper Moon (1973) for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination, Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975) in which he portrayed the title character, Richard Attenborough's A Bridge Too Far (1977), and Walter Hill's The Driver (1978). Beyond film, O'Neal had a recurring role on the Fox television series Bones from 2006 to 2017, where he played Max, the father of the show’s protagonist. Throughout his career, O'Neal was recognized for his performances across television and cinema, contributing to a diverse body of work that spanned several decades.
