Ruth E. Carter, born on April 10, 1960, is an acclaimed American costume designer for film and television. She is renowned for her collaborations with filmmakers such as Spike Lee, John Singleton, and Ryan Coogler. Throughout her career, Carter has earned multiple Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design, notably for Lee's biographical film Malcolm X in 1992 and Spielberg's historical drama Amistad in 1997. She has won the Academy Award twice for her work on Coogler's Marvel superhero films Black Panther in 2018 and Black Panther Wakanda Forever in 2022. Her achievements in these films made her the first African-American to be nominated for and to win an Oscar in the costume design category. Carter's record of nominations includes her fifth for Coogler's Sinners in 2025, making her the most-nominated Black woman in Oscar history.
