About Ross Milne

Leslie Ross Milne was an alpine ski racer from Australia who competed in the 1964 Winter Olympics. He was known for his advanced skill level and had been involved in competitive skiing for several years, including participating in Australian championships and racing in Europe. Milne learned to ski at Falls Creek ski area in the Australian Alps and was regarded as an experienced skier, having spent the winter of 1963 racing in Europe. At nineteen years old, he was competing in the men's downhill event at the Innsbruck Games when he lost control during a training run at Patscherkofel and struck a tree at more than 60 miles per hour, resulting in a fatal head injury. His death was the second fatality at those Olympic Games, following a luge accident three days earlier. An inquiry concluded that Milne caught an edge on the course, which was crowded and not properly managed at the time. His tragic accident prompted minor safety improvements to the downhill course before the race resumed. Milne was buried in his hometown of Myrtleford in Victoria, where his family farmed tobacco. His younger brother Malcolm Milne, born in 1948, became a notable alpine skier who competed in the Winter Olympics of 1968 and 1972 and achieved historic success on the World Cup circuit as the first non-European to win a men's World Cup downhill race. Ross Milne's legacy includes inspiring careers in alpine skiing beyond Australia and highlighting the importance of safety in competitive snow sports.
