Roberto Martínez Montoliu is a Spanish professional football manager and former player. Born on 13 July 1973, he played as a defensive midfielder and began his senior career with Real Zaragoza in 1993. During his debut season, he secured a Copa del Rey title. He subsequently played for Balaguer, Wigan Athletic, Motherwell, Walsall, Swansea City, and Chester City. At Wigan Athletic, he won the Third Division in 1997 and the Football League Trophy in 1999, and was part of the trio known as the Three Amigos with Jesús Seba and Isidro Díaz. During his time at Swansea City, he won the Football League Trophy in 2006. He retired from playing in 2007 at age 34. Martínez started his managerial career at Swansea City, leading the team to a League One title in 2008. He then managed Wigan Athletic, guiding them to their first FA Cup victory in 2013. Following a stint at Everton until 2016, he took on the role of Belgium national team coach. With Belgium, he achieved a third-place finish at the 2018 FIFA World Cup and reached the top of the FIFA World Rankings from 2018 to 2022. After failing to advance past the group stage in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he resigned. In 2023, Martínez became the head coach of Portugal and led the team to victory in the UEFA Nations League in 2025 before resigning after the round of 16 exit at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
