Rachel Jane Reeves, born on 13 February 1979, is a British politician affiliated with the Labour Party. Since 2024, she has served as the Chancellor of the Exchequer, making history as the first woman to hold the position in its over 800-year history. Reeves has represented Leeds West and Pudsey as a Member of Parliament since 2010. Her political career includes holding various shadow ministerial and cabinet roles, notably serving as Shadow Pensions Minister, Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. She was also chair of the Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Committee from 2017 to 2020 and returned to the shadow cabinet in 2020 as Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster before being promoted to Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer in 2021. Reeves has campaigned on a platform promoting modern supply-side economics aimed at boosting economic growth, increasing productivity, reducing inequality, and protecting the environment. She has proposed policies such as the nationalization of the railways. Following Labour's victory in the 2024 general election, she was appointed to the government as Chancellor of the Exchequer. Early in her tenure, she established the National Wealth Fund, cancelled certain infrastructure projects, and announced public sector pay rises. She delivered her first budget in October 2024, introducing the largest tax increases at a budget since 1993, and her second budget in November 2025 was marked by further tax rises that resulted in a significant decline in her popularity ratings.
