About Michael Gove
Michael Gove is a British politician and journalist who has served in various senior Cabinet positions in Conservative governments. He was a Member of Parliament for Surrey Heath from 2005 to 2024 and has been a member of the House of Lords since 2025. Gove has been involved in key political events, including the 2016 referendum on the United Kingdom’s membership of the European Union, where he was a prominent figure and a campaign co-convenor of Vote Leave. He has also stood for Conservative leadership on two occasions. Born in Aberdeen, he was in care until the age of four months and was raised in the Kittybrewster area. He attended Robert Gordon's College and studied English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford. Gove began his career as a journalist, working for The Press and Journal and later as a leader writer at The Times. His political career includes roles such as Secretary of State for Education, where he reformed examination qualifications and responded to the Trojan Horse scandal, and Secretary of State for Justice and Lord Chancellor. He also served as Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and held the position of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster responsible for no-deal Brexit preparations. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he coordinated the government's response as Minister for the Cabinet Office. More recently, he served as Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities until his departure from government in July 2022. Gove has been associated with The Spectator since 2024, where he serves as editor.
