About Phil Spector

Harvey Phillip Spector was an American record producer and songwriter renowned for his Wall of Sound production style in the 1960s. Born in the Bronx, he moved to Los Angeles as a teenager and co-founded the group the Teddy Bears in 1958, achieving success with their hit single To Know Him Is to Love Him. Spector established Philles Records in 1961, becoming the youngest U.S. label owner at that time. He maintained significant artistic control over his recordings, collaborating with arrangers like Jack Nitzsche and engineers such as Larry Levine. His studio band, later known as the Wrecking Crew, gained prominence through work with artists including the Crystals, Darlene Love, the Ronettes, and the Righteous Brothers. Spector expanded into film production with The Big T.N.T. Show and temporarily stepped back from music after recording the hit River Deep – Mountain High for Ike & Tina Turner. Between 1970 and 1973, he produced notable albums and recordings for the Beatles, John Lennon, and George Harrison, and briefly led A&R at Apple Records. He produced nineteen U.S. top-ten singles, including four number-one hits. His influence extended to shaping genres such as psychedelia, art rock, noise pop, and dream pop, and he is credited with advancing the role of the record producer. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, Spector's career was marked by periods of reclusion and controversy. In 2009, he was convicted for the murder of Lana Clarkson and served a prison sentence until his death in 2021.
