Peter Smyth: podcast appearances and interviews

Peter Smyth was an Irish-born merchant and politician in Nova Scotia who lived from 1800 to 1879. Born in Dublin, he immigrated to Nova Scotia in 1817 and became involved in various business ventures, including fish and cattle trading. Smyth owned at least two stores and engaged in land dealings. He was also active in public service, serving as a school board commissioner, road commissioner, justice of the peace, and custos rotulorum for Inverness County. Smyth represented Inverness County in the Legislative Assembly of Nova Scotia from 1847 to 1867. Originally a Liberal, he switched allegiance in 1857 to become a Conservative, reflecting a change in his political stance. After his time in the Assembly, he served as a member of the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia from 1867 until his death. Smyth was a committed Roman Catholic and donated part of his estate to the Diocese of Antigonish. He was married twice, first to Mary O'Grady and later to Ellen Keating. He passed away in Port Hood in 1879. His family included his daughter Elizabeth, who married Duncan J. Campbell.
