Peter Philip Laviolette Jr. is an American professional ice hockey coach and former player. Born on December 7, 1964, in Franklin, Massachusetts, he attended Franklin High School, where he played both baseball and ice hockey. He played college ice hockey at Westfield State College in Westfield, Massachusetts. Although he was undrafted by NHL teams, Laviolette played a total of 12 games with the New York Rangers during the 1988–89 season. After retiring from active play, he transitioned into coaching, serving as head coach for several NHL teams including the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Philadelphia Flyers, Nashville Predators, and Washington Capitals. He led the Hurricanes to a Stanley Cup victory in 2006 and guided the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Final in 2010. Laviolette also coached the Predators to the Final in 2017 and is one of the few NHL coaches to have led three different teams to the Stanley Cup Final. As of October 13, 2021, he became the winningest American-born NHL head coach, surpassing John Tortorella with his 647th win. By February 2022, he reached 700 NHL wins, and in March 2024, he achieved 800 wins, making him the eighth coach in league history to reach that milestone. Laviolette is currently the head coach for the Los Angeles Kings, continuing his extensive coaching career in the NHL.
