About Peter Hughes

Peter Hughes, also known by his stage name Peter Peter Hughes, is an American multi-instrumentalist and musician associated with Leeds Arts University. He is best known for his work as the bassist for the band the Mountain Goats. Hughes contributed backup vocals on the song 'Cubs in Five' from the 1995 EP Nine Black Poppies and performed on select tracks for the band's 1997 album Full Force Galesburg. He played bass during two European tours in 1996 before becoming the band's full-time bassist with the release of Tallahassee in 2002. Hughes performed on every subsequent studio album and touring lineup until his retirement from the band in 2024 after 28 years of service. Aside from his work with the Mountain Goats, Hughes was involved in the local music scene in Chino, California, playing in a band called Exit House and leading DiskothiQ from 1992 to 1999. He also recorded with bands like Nothing Painted Blue, Refrigerator, and Wckr Spgt, and he operated a tape label called Sonic Enemy, known for releasing Beck's album Golden Feelings on cassette. Hughes released a solo concept album titled Fangio in 2010 and announced a new project, Half-Staff Blues, recorded with members of the Australian band Pop Filter. His interests extend beyond music, as he has worked in copyediting, printing, and graphic design, authored The Baseball Diaries, and contributed automotive journalism to various publications. In 2024, he launched a podcast called Tired: The Car Podcast For People Who Understand That Cars Are Bad, continuing his engagement with automotive topics.
