About Peter Copeland
Peter Michael Copeland (17 July 1942 – 30 July 2006) was an English sound archivist, policy advisor to the Ontario Provincial government, and philosopher of science. Throughout his career, he was deeply involved in sound recording and archiving, beginning with his early interest in collecting gramophone records and sound recording techniques. He joined the BBC World Service in 1961 as a Technical Operator, later becoming a Studio Manager at Broadcasting House and working at BBC Regional studios in Bristol. During his time at the BBC, Copeland operated studio equipment and was responsible for final mixes on notable projects including David Attenborough's wildlife series Life on Earth. He also ran a sideline business, Gosport Sound Products, producing private recordings and mastering discs. His fascination with wildlife sounds led him to record birdsong and natural atmospheres, which he sold to the BBC Sound Archive. In 1986, Copeland left the BBC to join the National Sound Archive, where he held positions including Conservation Manager and Head of Sound Conservation. He was a key figure in transitioning the archive to digital formats and conducted extensive research in sound reproduction, especially concerning old recordings. Retiring in 2002, he continued consulting until his death from a diabetes-related heart attack in 2006. He was working on a comprehensive Manual of Analogue Sound Restoration Techniques, which the British Library published electronically. His collection of rare recordings was donated to the British Library Sound Archive, reflecting his lifelong dedication to sound preservation and archival research.
