Peter Edward Rose Sr. was an American professional baseball player and manager born on April 14, 1941. Known by the nickname 'Charlie Hustle', he played in Major League Baseball from 1963 to 1986, primarily as a member of the Cincinnati Reds team known as the Big Red Machine during the 1970s. Rose also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, with whom he won his third World Series championship in 1980, and had a brief stint with the Montreal Expos. He managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1984 to 1989. As a switch hitter, Rose is MLB's all-time leader in several statistical categories including hits, games played, at-bats, singles, and outs. Throughout his career, he won three World Series titles, three batting titles, an MVP award, two Gold Glove Awards, and was named Rookie of the Year. He made 17 All-Star appearances in five different positions, including second baseman, left fielder, right fielder, third baseman, and first baseman. Rose also won two Gold Glove Awards as an outfielder and holds the MLB record for the third-longest hit streak at 44 games. His career ended amid controversy; in 1989 he was declared permanently ineligible from baseball following allegations that he gambled on games during his playing and managing days. After initially denying the allegations, Rose admitted in 2004 that he had bet on baseball and his own team. His eligibility for the Baseball Hall of Fame remains a subject of debate, but he was posthumously reinstated in 2025.
