John William Weller, born on May 25, 1958, is an English singer-songwriter and musician. He gained prominence in the late 1970s as the guitarist, principal singer, and songwriter of the band the Jam. The band achieved considerable critical and commercial success in the United Kingdom and was a leading force in the mod revival of that era. After the band disbanded at the end of 1982, Weller formed the Style Council with Mick Talbot. The band explored diverse musical styles including pop, jazz, soul, hip hop, folk, and classical. While initially successful, the Style Council's popularity waned in the late 1980s, leading to their breakup in 1989. Weller then launched a solo career, releasing albums such as Paul Weller (1992), Wild Wood (1993), Stanley Road (1995), and Heavy Soul (1997), which helped re-establish his presence in the music scene. Weller is recognized internationally as a singer, lyricist, and guitarist, but he is particularly influential in his native country. His songwriting draws deeply from English society, with many lyrics addressing working-class life, especially during his time with the Jam. Known as the Modfather, he was a central figure in the mod revival and has influenced subsequent British alternative rock and Britpop artists, including Oasis. Weller has received four Brit Awards, including three for Best British Male, and was honored with the 2006 Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
