Paul List was a Russian Jewish chess player born in Odesa, Ukraine, on September 9, 1887. He emigrated to Britain in 1937 but did not acquire British citizenship. Throughout his career, he competed in chess tournaments across Russia, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with notable performances in each country. In 1908, he won a tournament in Odessa, and in 1910, he drew a match against Grigory Levenfish. He also participated in several Russian tournaments in the early 20th century, tying for third at Odessa in 1910 and competing in the All-Russian Masters' Tournament at Vilna in 1912. During the 1920s, List moved to Germany where he scored well in various tournaments including Berlin and Magdeburg. After relocating to Britain, he continued to perform competitively, tying for third at Plymouth in 1938, second at Birmingham in 1939, and sharing first place with Harry Golombek at London in 1940. Following World War II, he placed fifth at Zaandam in 1946. In his later years, he was recognized for his dedication to chess; in 1952, at the age of 65, he finished with a remarkable fifteen-and-a-half points out of eighteen in a tournament and was noted for his ongoing engagement with the chess community. Paul List passed away in London around 1954. His career reflects a lifelong commitment to chess across multiple countries and eras, marked by consistent competitive performance.
