Patrick Joseph McGoohan was an Irish-American actor, director, producer, and writer known for his work across film, television, and theatre. Born in New York City to Irish parents, he was raised in Ireland and England. McGoohan began his career in Britain during the 1950s and gained recognition for his role as secret agent John Drake in the ITC espionage series Danger Man, which aired from 1960 to 1968. He created and produced the surrealistic ITV series The Prisoner, in which he starred as former British intelligence agent Number Six. In the 1970s, McGoohan maintained a long-running association with the television series Columbo, contributing as a writer, director, producer, and actor in several episodes. His notable film roles included appearances in Ice Station Zebra, Mary, Queen of Scots, Escape from Alcatraz, Scanners, Braveheart, and A Time to Kill. He also provided the voice for Billy Bones in Treasure Planet. During the height of Danger Man's popularity, McGoohan was the highest-paid actor on British television. He received the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor in 1960 and won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series twice, including for his roles on Columbo. Additionally, he was nominated for a Drama Desk Award for his performance in the Broadway play Pack of Lies. McGoohan's work spanned multiple mediums and garnered critical acclaim throughout his career.
