About Oscar Robertson

Oscar Palmer Robertson, born on November 24, 1938, is a retired American professional basketball player renowned for his time with the Cincinnati Royals and Milwaukee Bucks in the National Basketball Association. Nicknamed the Big O, he was a 12-time All-Star and an 11-time member of the All-NBA Team. In 1964, he received the MVP award. Robertson is recognized as one of the greatest point guards in basketball history. He was the first NBA player to average a triple-double over an entire season, achieving this feat in 1962; he remains one of only three players to do so in league history. During the 1970–71 season, he played a pivotal role in leading the Milwaukee Bucks to their first NBA championship. His career was marked by significant challenges related to racism, particularly during his high school and college years. Robertson's contributions to basketball have been widely honored; he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice, once for his individual career in 1980 and again in 2010 as a member of the 1960 U.S. Olympic basketball team and for his role as president of the NBA Players Association. He was also named to the NBA 35th Anniversary Team, one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History, and the NBA 75th Anniversary Team. Additionally, the USBWA named their College Player of the Year Award the Oscar Robertson Trophy in his honor, and he was inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2009. Robertson played a key role in the landmark Robertson v. NBA suit, which led to reforms in league free agency and draft rules.
