About Noah Greenberg

Noah Greenberg was an American choral conductor born in the Bronx in 1919. Although self-taught, he gained recognition as a conductor by 1950, leading amateur choruses and recording with the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union. In 1952, he founded New York Pro Musica, which became notable for its focus on early music. Over the next 14 years, Greenberg and his ensemble recorded 28 LP albums and played a key role in popularizing early music in America. One of his significant achievements was the staging of The Play of Daniel in 1958, an 11th-century liturgical drama that had not been performed for 700 years. This production included contributions from prominent figures such as Meyer Shapiro, W. H. Auden, and Lincoln Kirstein, and marked a pivotal moment in the early music revival. Greenberg's innovative approach involved recreating medieval works from minimal surviving manuscripts, showcasing his dedication and scholarly approach. The success of the production led to a European tour funded by the US government in 1960. Known for his influence on American audiences' appreciation of early music, Greenberg's work was recognized for its faith and courage to present works outside the standard repertoire. He passed away in 1966 at the age of 46 from an apparent heart attack. His legacy includes the Noah Greenberg Award from the American Musicological Society and the Noah Greenberg Collection of Musical Instruments at New York University.
