Nathaniel Read Silver, born on January 13, 1978, is an American statistician, political analyst, author, sports gambler, and poker player. He is known for analyzing various sports including baseball, basketball, and football, as well as elections. Silver founded FiveThirtyEight, where he served as editor-in-chief and was a special correspondent for ABC News until May 2023. Since leaving FiveThirtyEight, he has published content through his online newsletter Silver Bulletin and acts as an advisor to Polymarket. Silver gained recognition in 2009 when his election forecasting model correctly predicted the outcome of 49 of 50 states in the 2008 U.S. presidential election, leading to his inclusion among Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people. His models continued to accurately forecast the results of subsequent presidential elections in 2012 and 2020. In the 2016 election, Silver estimated a 28.6% chance of victory for Donald Trump, which was higher than many other scientific forecasts. Silver's approach emphasizes using statistical models to analyze complex social systems, including professional sports, political popularity, and election outcomes.
