Willard Mitt Romney is an American businessman and retired politician who served as a United States senator from Utah from 2019 to 2025. He is a member of the Republican Party and has held various significant public offices, including serving as the 70th governor of Massachusetts from 2003 to 2007. Romney is known for his diverse career, which includes leadership roles in the private sector and a notable run for the presidency. After earning joint JD–MBA degrees from Harvard University in 1975, he joined Bain & Company in 1977, eventually becoming its chief executive officer. In 1984, he co-founded Bain Capital, which grew into a prominent private equity firm. Romney's political career includes an unsuccessful run for the U.S. Senate in Massachusetts in 1994, and a successful election as Massachusetts governor in 2002, during which he developed and signed a health care reform law often referred to as 'Romneycare.' He sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, 2012, and 2016, winning the nomination in 2012 but losing the general election to Barack Obama. After relocating to Utah, Romney was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2018, becoming the first individual in modern U.S. history to have served as both governor and senator of different states. Throughout his Senate term, he adopted a moderate stance, supporting various progressive measures and breaking with his party on several key votes, including voting to convict President Donald Trump during his impeachment trials. Romney announced he would not seek reelection and retired from the Senate in 2025.
