Rebecca Michelle Sherrill, born on January 19, 1972, is a politician and former naval officer who has been serving as the 57th governor of New Jersey since 2026. She is a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to becoming governor, Sherrill was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018, representing New Jersey's 11th congressional district. She was subsequently reelected in 2020, 2022, and 2024. Her election to the governorship in 2025 marked a significant milestone as she became the second female governor of New Jersey, after Christine Todd Whitman, and the first female Democratic governor of the state. Additionally, she is the first female military veteran to be elected governor of any U.S. state. Sherrill’s career includes experience as a federal prosecutor and service as a naval officer, reflecting her diverse background in public service and military affairs.
