Michael George Glen Waltz, born January 31, 1974, is an American politician, diplomat, businessman, author, and former Army Special Forces officer. He has served as the 32nd United States ambassador to the United Nations since September 2025 in the second Trump administration. Prior to this, Waltz served as the 29th national security advisor from January to May 2025 and was the U.S. representative for Florida's 6th congressional district from 2019 to 2025. Elected in 2018, he defeated former ambassador Nancy Soderberg and succeeded Ron DeSantis, who was elected governor of Florida that year. Waltz was re-elected in 2020, 2022, and 2024 with over 60 percent of the vote each time and served as chair of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Readiness for the 118th Congress. Known as one of Congress's most hawkish members regarding China, he viewed the Chinese Communist Party as being in a cold war with the United States and the West. In 2021, Waltz was the first member of Congress to call for a complete U.S. boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, citing concerns over human rights abuses and forced labor. In November 2024, President-elect Trump announced his intention to appoint Waltz as national security advisor; however, Waltz resigned after a brief tenure amid group chat leaks. Subsequently, Trump nominated him to serve as ambassador to the United Nations, replacing Elise Stefanik.
