Michael Joseph McCarthy, born on 7 February 1959, is a professional football manager, pundit, and former footballer. He began his playing career at Barnsley in 1977 as a central defender and later played for Manchester City, Celtic, Lyon, and Millwall, retiring in 1992. Although born and raised in England, McCarthy represented the Republic of Ireland internationally, earning 57 caps and participating in UEFA Euro 1988 and the 1990 FIFA World Cup.

As a manager, McCarthy has led several clubs including Millwall, Sunderland, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Ipswich Town. He also managed the Republic of Ireland national team, guiding the team to the knockout stage of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and returning for a second tenure in November 2018. During his second stint, he notably led Ireland to a UEFA Euro 2020 playoff place before leaving the position. His managerial career also includes brief periods at Cypriot club APOEL, Cardiff City, and Blackpool.

In addition to his work in football management, McCarthy has been a television pundit and commentator, working with broadcasters such as the BBC and Virgin Media Television.
