Michael Derrick Tubbs, born August 2, 1990, is an American politician currently serving as a special adviser for economic mobility and opportunity for Governor Gavin Newsom. He previously served as the 79th mayor of Stockton, California, from 2017 to 2021. During his tenure, Tubbs became the youngest mayor in Stockton's history and the first African-American mayor of the city, as well as the youngest mayor of a city with a population greater than 100,000. Prior to his mayoral role, he served as a member of the Stockton City Council from the 6th District from 2013 until 2017. After his election in 2016, he gained recognition for his leadership and initiatives aimed at improving economic opportunities. In 2020, Tubbs was defeated in his re-election bid by Kevin Lincoln. Following his term as mayor, he was appointed by Governor Newsom to serve in his current advisory role, focusing on economic mobility and opportunity. Tubbs is also a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of California in the 2026 election, continuing his engagement in state-level politics.
