Michael Jai White, born on November 10, 1967, is an American actor, martial artist, and director known for his work in action and martial arts films. He began his training in martial arts at the age of seven, specializing in styles including Kyokushin, taekwondo, kobudō, Shotokan, and the Superfoot System. White's first major role was in the 1995 HBO film Tyson, where he portrayed heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson. He gained further recognition for his portrayal of Al Simmons in the 1997 film Spawn, making him the first African American to play a major comic book superhero in a major motion picture. His performance in Spawn earned him a nomination for the Blockbuster Entertainment Award for Best Male Newcomer. Throughout his career, White has appeared in supporting roles in films such as Universal Soldier: The Return, Exit Wounds, The Dark Knight, and Tyler Perry's Why Did I Get Married? and its sequel. He has also starred in several direct-to-video or limited release films including Black Dynamite, Blood and Bone, Falcon Rising, Accident Man, Dragged Across Concrete, and As Good as Dead. In addition to acting, White has directed and starred in films including Never Back Down 2: The Beatdown, Never Back Down: No Surrender, and Outlaw Johnny Black.
