Michael Thomas Flynn is a retired United States Army lieutenant general who served as the 24th national security advisor for the first 22 days of the Trump administration. His military career included significant roles in shaping U.S. counterterrorism strategy and dismantling insurgent networks during the Afghanistan and Iraq Wars. Flynn held numerous senior intelligence assignments in both conventional and special operations and was appointed the 18th director of the Defense Intelligence Agency in July 2012. He served in this role until his forced retirement from the military in August 2014. Following his military career, Flynn established Flynn Intel Group, which provided intelligence services for businesses and governments, including clients in Turkey. He also delivered a Moscow speech at the RT anniversary celebration, sitting next to Russian president Vladimir Putin. In the political arena, Flynn was a national security advisor to Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign and was sworn in as the president's national security advisor in January 2017. His tenure was the shortest in the history of the position, ending in February 2017 amid controversy over his communications with the Russian ambassador. Flynn later pleaded guilty to making false statements to the FBI and cooperated with special counsel investigations before his case was dropped and he received a presidential pardon in November 2020. Subsequently, Flynn has become a prominent figure in the Christian nationalist movement and has publicly expressed views supporting election challenges, including discussions about suspending the Constitution and implementing military authority.
