Martin Joseph Walsh, born April 10, 1967, is an American trade union official and the current executive director of the National Hockey League Players' Association (NHLPA). He has previously served as the 53rd mayor of Boston from 2014 to 2021 and was the 29th United States secretary of labor from 2021 to 2023. Walsh's career includes serving in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 13th Suffolk district from 1997 until 2014, and heading the Boston Building Trades Council from 2011 to 2013. As mayor, he was involved in a building boom and enacted policies related to fair housing and zoning. He extended Boston Public Schools' academic year, supported the city’s bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and signed legislation such as the Boston Trust Act and paid parental leave ordinance. Walsh also supported housing regulations and welcomed General Electric's move to Boston. During his mayoralty, Boston faced ongoing challenges with homelessness, particularly at Mass and Cass, and addressed impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. As United States secretary of labor, Walsh was notable as the first former union leader in that role in nearly half a century and the first Cabinet member to openly participate in a twelve-step recovery program. Since assuming his role with the NHLPA in 2023, he has negotiated agreements related to Olympic participation and a four-year collective bargaining agreement with the NHL, effective from the 2026–27 season.
