About Martin Luther
Martin Luther was a German priest, theologian, author, hymnwriter, professor, and former Augustinian friar, born on 10 November 1483 in Eisleben. He was a seminal figure of the Protestant Reformation and his theological beliefs formed the basis of Lutheranism. Luther is known for his role in challenging certain teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church, particularly regarding indulgences and papal authority. His 1517 work, the Ninety-five Theses, initiated an international debate on these issues. In 1520, he was excommunicated after refusing to renounce his writings, and later that year, he was condemned as an outlaw at the Diet of Worms by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Luther held that justification is a gift of God's grace received through faith in Jesus Christ, emphasizing that good works are a natural consequence of living faith. His teachings questioned the authority of the pope and bishops by asserting that the Bible is the sole source of divine knowledge and that all baptized Christians are part of a holy priesthood. His translation of the Bible into German made scripture more accessible to laypeople and significantly influenced the development of the German language and later English translations, including the Tyndale Bible. Luther's hymns contributed to Protestant church music, and his marriage to Katharina von Bora set a precedent for clerical marriage within Protestantism. However, some of his later writings expressed antisemitic views, condemning Jews and calling for the destruction of synagogues. Despite this, Luther's impact on religious thought, culture, and language remains profound.
