Mark Joseph Carney, born March 16, 1965, is a Canadian politician and economist who has served as the chair of Brookfield Asset Management and head of transition investing. He has held various prominent roles in both public and private sectors, including serving as governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Carney's educational background includes a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University and both a master's degree and a doctorate in economics from the University of Oxford. Prior to his central banking roles, he worked at Goldman Sachs and served as a senior associate deputy minister at the Department of Finance Canada. During his tenure as governor of the Bank of Canada, he managed Canadian monetary policy during the 2008 global financial crisis. As governor of the Bank of England, he led responses to Brexit and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. After his central banking career, Carney held several leadership positions including chair of Bloomberg L.P., vice-chair at Brookfield Asset Management, and co-chair of the World Bank's private sector investment lab. He also served as the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Envoy on Climate Action and Finance. In 2024, he was appointed chair of the Liberal Party's Task Force on Economic Growth. He entered the party's leadership race in early 2025, winning the election and becoming the first prime minister of Canada never to have held elected office. As prime minister, he has overseen significant policy initiatives including removing the federal consumer carbon tax, enacting the One Canadian Economy Act, and increasing defense spending, while navigating complex international relations.
