Aloysius Martin Thesz, known by the ring name Lou Thesz, was an American professional wrestler and wrestling coach born on April 24, 1916, and died on April 28, 2002. He is regarded as one of the last legitimate wrestlers, often called a true shooter, and is recognized as one of the greatest wrestlers and wrestling world champions in history. Thesz held the NWA World Heavyweight Championship three times, with a combined total reign of over ten years, making it the longest in history. His influence extended internationally, where he was known as the 'God of Wrestling' in Japan and referred to as 'Tetsujin,' meaning 'Ironman,' reflecting his speed, conditioning, and expertise in catch wrestling. Alongside notable figures such as Karl Gotch and Billy Robinson, Thesz contributed to training young Japanese wrestlers and mixed martial artists in catch wrestling and served as head coach at the CACC Snake Pit Japan in his later years. As a successful amateur wrestler in his youth, he was dedicated to promoting and supporting the sport of wrestling. Thesz helped establish the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame, which honors wrestlers with a strong amateur background, and he was a charter member of various other halls of fame including WCW, Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Professional Wrestling, and WWE's Legacy Wing.
